Jeff is Cancer Free!

For the past few years Jeff has had a little spot inside his ear that wouldn't go away.  It didn't do much, except break open and never heal.  It doubled in size this past year and when my mom saw it this summer she encouraged him to see a dermatologist and get it checked.... she was pretty sure it was basil cell carcinoma...

And lo and behold, she was right!

So last Tuesday Jeff went in for his procedure to get it removed.  Because it was on his ear where there wasn't much tissue, they did a new procedure where they scraped some off, went to the lab to test it, came back and scraped off more, etc until it was all clean.  Then they closed it up with a "flip flop flap" style skin graft, which basically means they poked a hole through his ear, pulled the skin through from the other side, and stitched it all up together.

A few days later he was finally able to take off his bandages, to reveal his stitches!

Warning: These may gross some of you out...

Minus not being able to sleep on his left side or itch his ear, his recovery hasn't been too bad.  Tomorrow morning he goes in to get his stitches out, so hopefully all has healed as it should!

I've had an ear look just like that (the after pictures). Join the club. I'm glad you're cancer free, and congrats on giving Rob the willies. I guess it's good he never saw my ear when it looked like that :)
