Last Monday (December 3rd) we went up to Alpine with Nikki and Spencer to visit a live Nativity that had been put together by a few families and their ward members. From what I understand it started out small but has grown into quite an event.
We parked at a Stake Center and waited in line for a ride over to the ranch where the nativity was set up.
They had volunteers running people back and forth from the ranch in horse trailers.
When we arrived we got out and followed the flow of people through a series of scenes that had various animals, shepherds, Roman guards, etc.
After visiting these we waited in an extremely long line to see Mary, Joseph, and the Baby Jesus.
Before getting to their stable, we went through a large barn that had been set up with all kinds of examples of the foods, trades, past times, projects, etc that the people did during the time of Christ's birth. It was fun to see them all. Shad loved touching everything.
By this point he was getting very fussy (since it was getting past his bedtime and he was cold and hungry) but Nikki and Spencer helped us out a ton by entertaining him a while longer in the barn while Jeff and I went out and stayed in line.
When we got closer to the barn where the baby was there was a group of carolers singing Christmas hymns. I loved that, as it calmed everyone down and invited the spirit before entering into the stable.
Even though we knew they were actors, it was still a reverent site to see Mary, Joseph, and their sleeping baby as Jesus.
Even though we froze and Shad was long past done, it was very worth the effort of going and waiting in line. I hope they keep doing it so we can take our kids someday in the future!
