Last week was Lehi High School's Annual Basketball Alumni Tournament. Jeff was SOO excited to be able to play in it again this year!
The first game was on Monday, and little did we know, that it would turn out to be his last too.
In the last 2 minutes of the game, Jeff went in for a lay up, and his opponent attempted to take an unnecessary charge. Jeff side stepped him to shoot, which resulted in the opponent just kinda falling over into Jeff. Well, as it turned out, the kid fell into Jeff right as he came down from his lay up, planting his right foot on the ground. The kid hit his knee, and as Jeff went down he said he heard a couple pops and felt his knee move inside, almost being able to visualize ligaments tearing as it happened...
As I saw him go down and heard him yelling across the court, all I could think about was not now, this is the worst timing ever. Right when I'm going to need him most, he'll be out of commission. He couldn't walk at all and we had to have help off the court and then had Alex bring him crutches to get to the car.
Unfortunately, nothing has improved since then. He still can't bare any weight, and it's his right knee so he can't drive. He's now realizing how many flights of stairs our house has. Fortunately for him, my last day of work was the same day, so I've been home since then and able to drive him around.
Luckily we were able to get in to see an orthopedic/ sports medicine doctor, Dr. Karl Weenig, the next day- on Tuesday. He tried to test the integrity of the knee, but Jeff was in so much pain that he couldn't get a sure feel for what all was injured. He ordered an MRI which we were able to go in and get taken care of Wednesday morning. We got a call on Friday that Jeff had pretty much torn or damaged everything in it, and that the term "blew out his knee" wasn't an exaggeration.
Yesterday we went to see the orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Robert Jackson, (the doctor that did my ACL last year,) and as he was looking over the results of the MRI he kept saying, "Wow," "Ya you did a number on it," and "Whoo ya." Probably not good responses coming from a very experienced orthopedic surgeon. He told us that Jeff tore his ACL, MCL, and both sides of his meniscus. He sprained/strained his LCL with some possible disconnection from the bone, but he can't be sure till he gets in there. Basically the only thing still in tact is his PCL. Pretty much the only option is surgery and an arthroscopy.
Because we're on my insurance, which ends at the end of this month, we scheduled Jeff's surgery for the 28th of March so we can get it in before we get kicked off and have to jump on Jeff's insurance, which is not near as good of coverage. So instead of having Jeff around to help me with our new addition, I'll be taking care of our little baby and my big baby at the same time. Fun! Wish me luck! ; )

Oh my lanta! I'd say terrible timing, and that sucks regardless. Eek! Well if you need anything, which I know you will when that little angel comes, if not earlier, please don't hesitate to ask! Really, I'm not too far and more than willing to help! Good luck babe!
WOW! That really stinks! At least you will have earned some MAJOR brownie points that you can redeem after Jeff has healed :) hehe. Good luck! I hope he has a speedy recovery. I can't believe you got the whole incident in pictures! CRAZY!
What a story Linds! I hope you are handling it well. I'm sure you're doing great. I can't wait to hear about your little guy. You're in our prayers!
